Still Learning
Our recent activities have included taking a class to help us teach English as a second language. This will serve as an introduction to the 4-week TEFL course, starting Sept. 15. Ledy, from Venezuela (back left) was invited by the American couple (back right) to come give the class.
The Vuelta a España bike race started off in Granada with team races against the clock through the streets of the city.
Biking is big in Spain, and the news of Lance Armstrong coming out of retirement kind of pre-empted the Vuelta race, which continues in northern Spain until Sept. 21.
I continue to learn a lot of things on hikes. Sometimes the path is confusing, with many different signposts.
Sometimes there is animated discussion on which path to choose. A lot of people nowadays face these kinds of decisions. This particular day we went over open fields (for lack of a defined path),
Through trees (result of indecision),
And finally on well-marked paths (the obvious).
Olives, figs and grapes are often mentioned in the Bible. I imagine the terrain of southern Spain resembling parts of Palestine, partly because of olives, figs and grapes. We often pass olive groves. There are young trees,
And there are old ones. This one could be a couple hundred years old.
And both of them can be fruitful! As an old codger, this gives me hope!
My hiking friends like to pick figs, just like Jesus and his disciples.
I’d never seen a ripe fig before,
Much less eat one. My only reference was Newton fig bars. No comparison! These are sweet and delicious!

The grapes are also ripening. That brings to mind Jesus’ discourse on the vine, the branches and the fruit.
This particular day we finally hit the highway,
Got a bus and headed for home.
