The Harvest

Welcome to our blog! If you’ve been here before, you might think we’re on a sightseeing extravaganza! While it’s true there are some amazing sights in Granada and southern Spain, look beyond the pictures and read between the lines. For example, in my weekly hikes with the “guys,”

we’ve seen some amazing sights. Among them are the vineyards. We’ve seen the blooms, the growing grapes growing in the vineyards,

And finally the harvest.

This brings to mind something I was reading this morning about grapevines, branches and fruit. Something about the branches being connected to the vine. Not having been around vineyards much over my lifetime, and now seeing acres and acres of vineyards laden with fruit makes an impression. In productive vineyards, the ground is free of weeds and the vines are well taken care of. The non-bearing branches are cut off where the workers gather them, throw them on a pile, and they are burned.

What remains are branches that are firmly connected to the vine and are full of ripe, delicious fruit.

Great pride is taken in southern Spain regarding the fruit of the vine. Other harvests are happening as well. Olives

And almonds.

This harvest season serves as a reminder that the harvest doesn’t just happen. It comes about as a result of careful selection of the ground, planting, cultivating, watering and pruning. There is a season for everything and it takes many people working together for there to be a successful harvest. Get the idea?
